Earlier this month, one-year-old Nicholas Dominici died after coming into contact with fentanyl at a daycare in the Bronx, New York. Three other children also were hospitalized with acute opioid intoxication. The daycare’s owner and her husband now face various criminal charges. How does such a situation happen, and how can it be prevented from happening again?

What Happened in the Bronx Daycare Overdoses?

On September 15, emergency services were called to a small daycare in the Bronx named Divino Niño day care center, where four children had been exposed to fentanyl. They were in a state of opioid toxicity. One member of the four-person drug ring was caught on camera carrying bags that contained fentanyl shortly before the emergency workers arrived. One child died, and the others were hospitalized.

More investigation into the daycare revealed that the place was used as a stash house for drugs and guns. The daycare owner, her husband, and two other participants were arrested. Her husband was one of the ringleaders and was detained near the border.

“Felix Herrera was arrested for his alleged role in running a fentanyl mill hidden inside a Bronx daycare, which caused the tragic death of a one-year-old boy and seriously injured three other children,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said in a statement. “Herrera’s arrest on the other side of the nation reflects our tireless pursuit of Herrera, who fled the daycare even as the children he abandoned inside were suffering from his poisonous trade.”

Authorities have also noted that Mr. Herrara recently experienced an overdose death in his own life: his brother. Last year, he placed a frantic call to emergency services because his brother had taken a substance and could not wake up. Sadly, his brother passed away.

Days later, in the same Bronx neighborhood, a man was caught rolling a luggage case full of fentanyl, presumably transporting it for sale, through the subway. The case weighed thirty pounds.

“As opioid use skyrockets, illegal drugs are often contaminated with fentanyl or other dangerous substances, and overdoses have hit historic levels, including in New York City,” Mayor Adams said of the incident. “We cannot allow this crisis to continue taking lives and destroying communities.”
