Every September, National Recovery Month takes place across the United States to help increase awareness of addiction and recovery. One major part of the mission is to educate people about the resources available to individuals with substance use problems and their families.
We Are All in this Together
No matter who you are or where you live, mental health and substance use disorders affect people in your community. That’s why it’s so important to spread the message that recovery IS possible and resources are available to those who seek it.
This year, the focus of National Recovery Month is the theme “Recovery is For Everyone: Every Person, Every Family, Every Community.” Help and hope are available for families and people with substance use disorders.
Addiction is a Family Disease
Everyone who loves a person battling addiction is also battling the disease, whether they realize it or not. Therefore, learning more about addiction and how it affects families is essential.
Programs such as Al-Anon or Codependents Anonymous can help family members learn to live with anothers’ disease. Children and romantic partners also benefit from family therapy to process their feelings and start their path to recovery.
Recovery is Possible and Available
If you or somebody you love has a problem with alcohol or substances, give yourself a chance. There are many tools available to help people begin the journey to recovery.
